1-GI_hepato-biliary PP -Pathology of liver diseases Flashcards
is the liver dual or signle blood supply?
Dual blood supply, hepatic artery and portal vein.
What is the fucntion of the liver?
1- protein synthesis
2- metabolism of fat and carbs
3- detoxification of drugs and toxins including alcohol.
What are the pathology of liver, Gallbladder and Extrahepatic bile duct?
1- liver ( liver failure, jaundice, intrahepatic bile duct obstruction, cirrhosis, liver tumours)
2-Gallbladder pathology ( inflammation)
3-Extrahepatic bile duct (obstruction)
what are the two liver failure complitations?
1-Acute liver injury (liver failure)
2-Chronic liver injury such as cirrhosis
What causes Acute liver injury (or liver failure)?
1-hepatitis (inflammation of liver) such as viruses, alcohol and drugs.
2-Bile duct obstruction.
What are the viruses that cause liver inflammtion (hepititis)?
1-Hepatitits A
2-Hepatitits B
3-Hepatitits C
4-Hepatitits E
-Other virus (less commonly cause hepititis)
Each of the hepatitic viruses are structurally distinct with different mode of transmittion.
All viruses that causes inflammtion of the liver will cause liver cells death (necrorsis of liver cells).
if large number of liver cells die this caused liver failure.
70% of liver cell death cause liver failure.
What is the precentage of liver cells death to have liver failure?
70% of liver cell death cause liver failure.
what are the outcomes of liver hepititis (liver inflammation)?
1- For Hepatitis A and E generally the liver returns to normal if the pt get over the acute inflammation phase.
2-for Hepatitits A and E ( if pt didn’t get over the acute phase and there is severe damage to the liver) and Hepatitits B leads to liver failure if there is severe damage to the liver.
3- for Hepatitits B and C it progress to: Chronic hepatititis and Cirrhosis whihc effect liver struture and liver function
