1- Proteins Flashcards
(8 cards)
Draw the general structure of a protein
How is a dipeptide formed?
- Condensation reaction, water is removed
- Peptide bond formed between OH of carboxyl group and H of amine group
- Between two amino acids
What is the primary structure of an amino acid?
the number and sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
What is a secondary protein?
The way polypeptide chain folds into alpha helices or beta pleated sheets held by weak hydrogen bonds
What is a tertiary structure?
Further folding of the secondary structure to form a unique 3D shape. Held by ionic, disulphide and hydrogen bonds between R groups
What is the test for proteins?
1) Equal volume of biuret solution
2) If present turns purple
3) Not present stays blue
What is the quaternary structure?
Protein made up of more than one polypeptide chain
What happens when a protein denatures?
Bonds which hold the tertiary and secondary structure break and lose its unique 3D shape.
