What was the point of the three confrences Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam?

A

Britain, The soviet union and the USA needed to work together to defeat Germany and Japan. Also to reach an agreement about how Europe would be governed after the end of the war.

What happened at the Tehran conference?

A

Tehran confrences November 1943, Grand alliance met to arrange a strategy to end the war.

USA and Britain would arrange second front launching attack on Germany in Western Europe. Ease pressure on Eastern front because Soviet suffering heavy loses. Germans would have to take troops to fight the west.

Stalin would declare war against Japan and supply Soviet troops to help USA with the war, only once WW1 was over.

Big three discussed what happenes to Germany and east to Germany. No formal agreement but to bring the complete surrender of them. Agreed that Poland should receive land. General agreement of an international body to settle disputes and negotiations founded United Nations

What were the impacts of the Tehran Conference?

A

Important impact on relations. Stalin was concerned about USA and Britain was delaying the second front against Germany so was pleased with the agreement for the second front. Dispute between Churchill to were it should be opened.

Tensions between USA and Britain, Roosevelt viewed British colonialism more of threat to world peace than the SU. Good relationship between USA and SU created the Big two

What happened at the Yalta conference?

A

Yalta, 1945 Another meeting at Yalta. Discussed how to bring war with Germany to an end and the government of post war Europe. Second front launched in France by then, British and US forces pushed Germans towards Berlin. SU defeated Germany in the SU and had control of most of central and eastern Europe. Stalin wanted to keep territory

What were the Impacts of the Yalta, 1945?

A

Agreement made over following issues

Germany split into 4 zones after war. Each power control different zone. Germany would pay 20 billion in reparations half would go to SU. Nazi party banned all Nazi war criminals.

United Nations set up All nations could join USA didn’t agree with the the Soviets that each individual soviet republics should be given individual membership.

Stalin agreed to join war

Stalin agreed that future government of countries in Eastern Europe have few elections

Agreed that the borders of Poland would return to their position and have free elections/ Stalin wanted pro communist governments British wanted non communist.

What happened at the Potsdam conference?

A

New leaders of UK and US much more suspicious and hard with Stalin.

Development of the atomic bomb worsens relations. Defeat of Germany removed to work against common enemy.

Germany divided into 4 zones controlled by the big powers, UK, US , SU and France.

Berlin divided into 4 as well. Controlled by 4 powers.

SU wanted Germany to pay heavy reproductions. Truman concerned would make it harder for German economy to recover. Agreed reparations were dealt by own zones.

Agreement not reached over control of western Europe. Truman objected about SU having control over other countries it took from Germany. SU were not leaving other countries. Worried Truman.

Truman objected to arrangements for Poland and the borders that had previously been agreed. Wanted a new government in place.

What were the Impacts of the Potsdam conference?

A

Grand alliance had changed because of the confrences. Clear there were significant issues could not agree on. Stalin wanted control of eastern Europe to ensure security of the SU. Truman believed Stalin wanted to spread communist and it was aggression. creating Peaceful hostility.

What was the impact of the Atomic Bomb on US- Soviet relations?

A

In 1945 US exploded atomic bomb over Japanese city Hiroshima/ Killed 120,000 Japanese citizens by 2 bombs.

Stalin felt more determined to make SU secure. His aims was to create a buffer zone of countries sympathetic to communism between their border. It had the opposite affect to what the US thought

US nuclear advancements didn’t last SU developing their own Atomic bomb.

Dramatically increased cold war tension, becuase of the possibility and consequences of the war.
