Conformity
-when a person changes their attitude or behaviour due to real or imagined group pressure
Why is conformity necessary
-served valuable social purpose
-helps social interaction to happens smoothly and allows us to predict what other people will do
-in schools and prisons allows small minority staff to manage larger group of individuals
Compliance
-shallowest level conformity
-changes public behaviour
-does not change private beliefs
-short term change
-normative social influence
Identification
-middle level conformity
-person changes public behaviour
-changes private beliefs only in presence of group
-usually short term change
-normally result of normative social influence
-e.g person may decide to become vegetarian because all new flatmates vegetarian however when alone can’t resist mcdonald’s
Internalisation
-deepest level conformity
-changes public behaviour and private beliefs
-long term change
-often result of informational social influence
