10. Strategies For Enhancing Instruction Flashcards
What must the instructor understand to meet the needs of their class participants?
Instructor must understand how to modify, deliver, and adjust their methods for the variety of different levels in the class
How is teaching human movement complex?
The learner must possess:
Motor skills, mental ability to memorize steps, have an understanding of how an exercise is supposed to look and feel, possess body awareness
How does the instructor contribute to the learning of the participants in the class?
By building rapport and giving effective instruction that continues to help participants in mastering techniques
What teaching tools does an instructor have?
The set up, execution, transitions, cueing, and rhythm.
What is involved in the set up of a movement?
Establishing the “start” position: Naming the exercise and positioning equipment
Enables the participants to anticipate the upcoming movement
What is involved in the execution part of teaching?
The movement is performed through the full range of motion with correct technique and form. The instructor coaches with direct cues using an economy of words.
How does an instructor integrate visual, verbal, and kinesthetic cues?
Using verbal execution cues to indicate position, visually demonstrating the movements, incorporates visualization and experiential cues
Eg. For a push-up: bend the elbows, keep them close to your body, your upper and lower body move as one, brace your core, pretend that you about to be punched in the stomach, imagine you are working your chest muscles
How are the transitions useful as a teaching technique?
Flowing from one exercise to the next is important. Good flow can prevent injury and improve performance.
Transitions also maintain motion
What is the matching type of transition?
Where one exercise ends and then another starts
E.g. A barbell front squat going into an overhead press, or a grapevine followed by single leg hamstring curls
What is the mending type of transition?
Stringing two exercises or movements together
E.g. Doing a squat with an overhead press in unison, in cardio kickboxing, a right knee and left uppercut performed simultaneously
What is the patching type of transition?
Performing an additional movement between two exercises
Eg. Burpees: where you transition from a push-up,to knee tuck, to stand and jump, the knee tuck is the patch component
What is the key to cueing?
Using as few words as possible to deliver directions and desired outcomes
Cue ahead of the movement
Provide corrective instruction during the exercise
How many corrective actions should instructor give at one time?
One corrective action at a time and choose the most critical
In what order should corrective instructions be given?
Corrective instructions should start from the person’s trunk and move toward the extremities
Work from the ground up
Speak sequentially
What qualities should instructions have?
Be positive and solution-based
Concise and without filler words
How does rhythm impact the class?
Rhythm is the tempo of the movement
It’s can influence the intensity of a movement through pace and control
Rhythm also provokes emotion and motivation
How are group fitness instructors different to their counterparts personal trainers?
Group fitness instructors have to educate groups of participants all at once
How might an instructor use the triple F strategy for class education?
They focus on form, function, and fit
The strategy educates on the benefits of performing the exercises with proper technique and form and goes into great detail about target muscles and functions
What are instructions in line with the form, function, fit strategy?
Form: stand with feet hip width apart to create a solid base of support, keep the core engaged
Function: bracing the core helps to stabilize the lumbar spine reducing injury, we are training the body to do movements that we repeat in our every day lives
Fact: this is a multi joint exercise involving multiple muscles, it targets the quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes
What is the focus of the performance class strategy?
The strategy highlights the performance benefits of the class
Focus is on a personal benefit to muscles, bodyweight, and overall ability
E.g. This position activates the biceps more effectively
What is the focus of the health benefits strategy for teaching?
Emphasis is on the behavioural and health aspects of exercise
Work to build an awareness of an individual’s health and overall well-being
Teach participants what moderate intensity exercise feels like, how to recognize and increase in their well-being by noting their mood at the beginning and ending of class, making suggestions for continuation of exercise outside of class
What is the foundational step in analyzing performance and providing feedback?
Beginning with an evaluation of the stability of the participants
Ensure proper standing and balance in floor based postures
How is an instructor working to empower a participant?
The goal is to help participants to improve over time so they can become more self motivated and regulated
What does cue to the solution mean?
Offering a positive approach to instructions and staying away from the word “don’t”
