How do you test for co2 with hydrogen carbonate indicator

A
  1. Soak dried beans in water for two days, they will germinate and respire
  2. Boil a similar sized second bunch of dried beans. This will kill the beans so they can’t respire and they will be the control.
  3. Put the same amount of hydrogen carbonate indicator in two test tubes
  4. Place a platform made of gauze into both test tubes and place the beans on this
  5. Seal the test tubes with a rubber bung
  6. Leave both test tubes for 1 hours
  7. After one hour the co2 in the germinating beans should have had an affect on the hydrogen carbonate indicator and turned it yellow

How can you measure temperature change produced by respiration

A
  1. Prepare two sets of beans
  2. Add each set of beans to a vacuum flask making sure there’s air left in the flasks so the beans can respire aerobically
  3. Place a thermometer in each flask and record the temp daily for a week
  4. Repeat the experiment 10 times.
  5. When the germinating beans the flasks temp will increase compared to the control.
