How do you test the occulomotor nerve?

A

Inspect eyes, looking for ppil abnormality, presence of ptosis or any abnormality of gaze

Eye movements - H pattern

Ask abot doble vision and look for nystagmus

Probably good to mention to the examiner that you are testing nerves 3,4 and 6

How to test trigeminal?

A

Sensation - both cotton wool and tip

Motor - masseter and pterygoid muscles

Corneal reflex

Jaw reflex

A

Inspect: assymetry

Motor: wrinkle forehead, screw up eyes, smile and show teeth

A

Check for nystagmus

Check balance - gait - perhaps do heel-toe or romberg?

Hearing - whisper test, rinnes and webers

A

Sensation from pharynx and tonsils

Sensation and taste from the posterior 1/3 of tongue
