Q

Stimulation of 5HT-3 receptors leads to

A

Stimulation of 5HT-3 receptors inhibits NE and ACh release leading to depressed mood and cognitive dysfunction

  1. Binds to GABAergic neurons on 5HT-3 sites —> release GABA onto nor adrenergic and cholinergic neurons—> reduces release of an NE and a ACh
  2. Inhibits release of NE and ACh when it binds to 5HT-3 receptors on adrenergic and cholinergic neurons

Q

5HT-2C receptor antagonism causes?

A

Normally, 5HT excites GABA interneurons by stimulating 5HT-2C receptors which increases the release of GABA. GABA can then bind to GABA-A receptors on noradrenergic and dopaminergic neurons. Since GABA is inhibitory, it prevents these neurons from releasing NE and DA

5HT-2C antagonism leads to disinhibition of monoaminergic neurons and increased NE & DA in
Prefrontal cortex —> Improved mood and cognition

Q

Main signs and symptoms that distinguish neuroleptic malignant syndrome from serotonin syndrome

A

In serotonin syndrome hyperactivity symptoms including tremor hyperreflexia, and myoclonus oppose the decreased reflexes and muscle rigidity seen in neuroleptic malignant syndrome
