what is the rhesus system
A
- rhesus positive people have the rhesus antigen and therefore no rhesus antibodies
- Rh negative people can develop antibodies if transfused with rhesus positive blood or are pregnant with a Rh positive baby
- called rhesus sensitisation and antibody is IgG type

what is haemolytic disease of the newborn
A
- a Rh negative mother has a Rh positive foetus
- may produce antibodies that cross placenta and harm baby
- causes anaema, jaundice and kernicterus
