How does Homegroup work and what versions of Windows provide it?

A
  • Provides a way to easily share information. Available in Windows 7/8/Windows 8/ 8.1. Note Windows Homegroup was removed from Windows 10.
  • It allowed you to easily share Documents, pictures, music and videos.
  • A Network for the home. Must be set to “Home” in Windows
  • Enable Homegroup and it provided a single password that people on your home network could use to access your locally shared videos, pictures, music etc and anything you chose to select for sharing.

How does Windows Workgroup work and in what situations would it be used?

  • Workgroups
  • Used for small departments. Each computer maintains it’s own user information.
  • Non-centralized username and password. Username and password doesn’t work across other systems.
  • To manage user names and passwords you would go to the Control Panel >System to adjust these types of settings.

What does the Windows Domains provide functionality for?

A
  • Provides a central database for Active Directory, Domain Services
  • Designed for the enterprise
  • Can add users and authenticate them, managed centrally meaning that users can go to various systems on the network and login using the same username and password.
  • Can also manage the operating system. deploy software.
  • Windows Domain can be managed in the Control Panel> System settings.

In Windows how would you go about joining a Domain?

A
  • First you have to make sure you are not running a home edition of Windows. Needs to be Windows Pro or better
  • Next go to the Control Panel> System> Advanced settings and then under the Computer name tab, domain and workgroup settings you would click on “ Change Settings” note you must be running as administrator. Then use the wizard to setup the join domain or workgroup. Must then provide the appropriate credentials for the domain provided by the Admin or other user who has this info.
