None. An EpiPen must NOT be used to treat asthma.

What are the specific precautions?

Answer 5

ALWAYS give EpiPen® FIRST and then asthma reliever puffer if someone with known asthma and allergy to food, insects or medication has sudden breathing difficulty (e.g. wheeze, persistent cough or hoarse voice), even if there are no skin symptoms
Patient’s own injector may be used
Do not walk patient pre/post EpiPen administration
Advise transport to a medical facility due to risk of bi-phasic reactions

What are the management techniques and dosages?

Position patient supine, or in recovery position if unconscious.
Dose: Prepare EpiPen and give - lateral mid-thigh.

Adult/Paediatric ≥ 20kg/≥5yo: 0.3mg repeat every 5 min as clinically indicated

Infant/Paediatric <20kg/<5yo: 0.15mg repeat every 5 min as clinically indicated

Tachycardia, arrhythmias
Increase in blood pressure (may be marked)
Tremor, anxiety
