Q

JPEG lossy advantages

A

common file format - many people use it
o higher resolution
o small file size for easy transport
and storage – can be easily transferred through the internet, keeps quality (to a certain extent
o high colour range (but colours reduce and blur when compressed)
o compatible and versatile, working on a variety of different platforms
o small file format (due to reducing and compression) allows for faster transfer of images
o high resolution - keeps image quality relatively
o well
o small file size (compared to BMP
or PNG)
o no editing required to print
most convenient for transmission of compressed images on the Internet

Q

GIF lossless advantages

A

second most common file format on the internet - compatible with a range of platforms
o portability between many applications and operating systems
o lossless compression because of the smaller file size, GIFS can be animated (several images combined in one file)
o due to smaller storage can be transferred easily through the internet, downloaded, webpage loads quicker

Q

PNG lossless

A

raster file format. Portable network graphic format.

17
Q

PNG lossless advantages

A

supports lossless data compression - keeps quality and detail
smaller file size
o supports transparency in layers, allowing for a variety of features. EG: images can be placed over each other
o supports palette-based images as well as grayscale images
o good for editing and makes image clearer that other format
o lossless
o transparent layers
o can be edited in different layers
- makes it easier to edit the file, useful for both web design and editing in programs
o small file size - easy to store & share
o can be used in network design to create transparent or semi- transparent backgrounds

18
Q

PNG lossless disadvantage

A

larger image size requires more storage space

o slower to transfer, can slow down the loading of a webpage
