10.3 - Hypothalamus Pituitary Connection Flashcards

1
Q

Where does the hypothalamus produce hormones? What are they? Where are they stored?

A

Produces hormones (Oxytocin and ADH) in neurosecretory cells

  • > these hormones are carried to the posterior lobe of pituitary via nerve cells
  • > these hormones are then stored in the posterior lobes to be released in blood when needed

Q

Where are releasing hormones produced and transported to? What are they?

A

In the neurosecretory cells in the hypothalamus
-> releasing are secreted in the blood and carried to anterior lobe of pituitary

  1. TRH and TSH
  2. GnRH and FSH, LH
  3. ACRH and ACTH

Q

Differences between anterior and posterior pituitary?

A
  1. Posterior neurons extend into posterior lobe, anterior does not (stop at end of hypothalamus)
  2. Posterior hormones enter through nerves, anterior hormones enter through blood
