week 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Grays reinforcement sensitivity theory

A

personality as motivational tendencies built up from neurobehavioural research. developed bottom up rather than top down. Developed by Jeff Gray, working with eyesnck. Three system model, formed of the BAS, BIS, and FFFS. Idea is that its the systems that underlie personality, rather than BEING personality

Q

eysencks giant three

A

extraversion vs introversion (E)
Neuroticism versus emotional stability (N)
Psychoticism V impulse control (P)
heirarchical, supertraits at top. conceptualised traits as composed of habitual responses

Q

BAS

A

Behavioural activation system. Neurobehavioural system governing how sensitive we are to reward. Aligned with positive affect and emotions, such as excitement, happiness, and enthusiasm. Also associated with negative emotions such as anger in situations where progress towards an anticipated reward is obstructed. All rewarding stumuli, even stuff like self-efficacy from skill mastery

Q

BIS

A

Behavioural inhibition system.
SImiliar to FFFS, governs inhibatory control and caution. Isn’t a neuatral regulator between conflict of the BAS and FFS, will side with the FFFS. Function is to suppress behaviours predicted to be maladaptive. Primary emotion generated is ANXIETY

Q

The neurology shit of the FFS and BIS

A

Fear (FFFS) is in the medial hypothalamus, amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex.
ANXIETY: (BIS) Acitivty in the Amygdala, septo-hippocampal system, posterior cingulate cortex.
Some drugs can supress fear but not anxiety, and vice versa.

Q

problems with the RST

A

based on evolutionary theory, a lot of evidence relies on animals. jumping from purely bio (RST), to personality theory is pretty big, to go frmo concrete to abstract personality theories.
