Q

What is uncertainty avoidance

A

Not the same as risk avoidance, it deals with a societys tolerance for ambiguity. it indicates the extent to which a culture programs its members to feel either uncomfortable or comfortable in unstructured situations that may be novel, surprising, or different. Cultures high in uncertainty avoidance have strict behavioural codes, rules and laws (eastern bloc)

Q

Masculinity/femininity

A

The Masculinity side of this dimension represents a preference in society for achievement, heroism, assertiveness, and material rewards for success. Society at large is more competitive. Its opposite, Femininity, stands for a preference for cooperation, modesty, caring for the weak and quality of life. Society at large is more consensus-oriented.

Q

So, with this new whizz bang research model, whats the word on the FFM and cross-cultralism?

A

Four out of five appear in most cultures, oppenness does not occur for each; now considered to be ‘emic’ of the west. possibly because oppeness correlates with individualism, so therefore doesn’t go with collectivist cultures
