Define employment.
Having a contract, either part-time or full-time and usually permanent with a single employer that provides additional benefits such as pension and holiday pay.
What does PAYE stand for?
Pay as you earn.
What does NI stand for?
National Insurance.
What is NI?
NI is a form of taxation, paid by everyone in the UK to pay for things like healthcare and a state pension.
Define self-employment.
Where you work for yourself, it can also be called being freelance.
What does HMRC stand for?
Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
What is HMRC?
The government department that collects taxes.
Define a contract.
A legal agreement between two parties.
What’s the difference between a long-term and short-term contract?
How long the contract lasts for. Most freelancers will only have short term contracts.
Why might you need an invoice as a freelancer?
To ensure you get paid - you submit an invoice when you have completed some work to tell the person you worked for how much money they owe you.
If you have submitted your invoice, waited a suitable length of time and still haven’t been paid, whom might you contact?
A union or small claims court.
What would be the typical working pattern for the manager of a large theatre.
Full-time employed - permanent contract. Even though lots of musicians are freelance, this individual will work for the theatre.
Why might you volunteer in the music industry?
To make contacts and/or gain experience.
What is an entrepreneur?
Somebody who created their own opportunities, for example by starting a business.
What is casual employment?
A more flexible contract where the worker doesn’t have to accept work offered and the employer doesn’t have to offer any work. The employer doesn’t have to provide benefits such as holiday pay or a pension, just an agreed rate of pay. This is very useful for events such as music festivals.
