Q

What is Emergency Special Working? (ESW) brief description

A

It is the process of signalling a train past two or more consecutive signals that have failed. It is similar in purpose to TBW but a new alternative. It speeds up the flow of traffic and when there is a failure and is more responsive than TBW.

Q

who will give you an emergency special working ticket [NR3190] and when?

A

The signaller will give it to you over the phone or over the GSMR when stopped at the stop signal before entering an Emergency Special Working block. You will then mark it as cancelled at the exit signal after you have spoken to the signaller to be cleared out of the block, you will do this by writing CANCELLED across the ticket.

A

They will locked with a:

  1. clip,
  2. scotch, and
  3. padlock.
27
Q

what is the Emergency Special Working Ticket number?

A

NR3190

28
Q

What is the speed limit for an ESW area and additional speed limit at certain times when you are not the first train through?

A

50mph and 15mph over the three types of points.

29
Q

What should you do if you are the first train through an ESW block?

A
  1. Approach all points, switch diamonds and swingnose crossings with caution
  2. Check they are in the correct positon
  3. Not proceed at more than 15mph over these points.

You can proceed at 50mph for the rest of the time

30
Q

When do you not need to a complete an ESW ticket [NR3190]

A
  1. Assisting a failed train
  2. Evacuating passengers from a failed train
  3. Removing a portion of a divided train
  4. Removeing a train whihc has passed a signal without authority.

MUST PROCEED AT CAUTION UNDER ALL THESE SCENARIOS

31
Q

When you arrive at a start signal of an ESW area what must you do?

A
  1. STOP at the entrance signal which will be held at danger
  2. Set DRA
  3. Contact the signaller, tell them headcode, stopped at siganl number
  4. Complete ESW ticket NR3190 and UNDERSTAND
  5. Reset DRA
  6. Isolate TPWS
  7. Disregard AWS horns/ SPAD Boards
  8. Proceed at no faster than 50mph
32
Q

When you arrive at the exit signal of an ESW block what should you do?

A
  1. Stop at Signal
  2. Set DRA
  3. Reset TPWS
  4. Contact Sig: Headcode / sig number
  5. Cnncel NR3190 ticket with word CANCELLED
  6. Procceed as normal when cleared obeying all line side signals.
33
Q

Can Emergency Special Working be used on a single line?

A

No

ESW can only be used on multi track lines with track circuit block.

34
Q

Can Emergency special working be used on a multi track line with no track circuit?

A

No

ESW can only be used on multi track lines with track circuit block.

35
Q

Can Emergency Special working be used on a multi track line with track circuit block working?

A

Yes

ESW can only be used on multi track lines with track circuit block.

36
Q

When can Emergency special working be used?

A
  1. When the line is multi track and has track circuit block
  2. When two or more consecutive signals have failed.
37
Q

What is Temporary Block Working

A

It s the process of signalling trains through a section of line where two or more consecutive signals have failed, by use of handsignalers positioned at an entrance and exit signal.

38
Q

What are the main differnces between ESW and TBW?

A
  1. Instructions relayed: With ESW instructions and authority is given directly to the driver via the cab phone or GSMR [NR3190 ticket]. On TBW a handsignaler positioned at the signal will pass on the instructions in the form of an RT3184 ticket and auhtoirty.
  2. Locking Points: points / switch diamonds / swing nose crossings do not need to be locked in an ESW block if they are showing ‘normal’ or reverse ‘indications’ . They all need to be locked in a TBW block.
39
Q

What is the sequence of events at the entrance to a Temporary Block working section?

A
  1. STOP train
  2. Set DRA
  3. Speak to handsignaller and recivee and understand RT3184 ticket
  4. Handsignaller will then remove detonator and show yellow flag
  5. Reset the DRA
  6. Isolate the TPWS
  7. Procceed to the cleared signal no faster than 50mph
40
Q

Under what circumstances do you not need an RT3184 or NR3190 ticket when entering an ESW or TBW section?

A
  1. Assisting failed train
  2. Evacuating passengers from failed train
  3. Removing part of a divided train
  4. Removing a train that passed a signal without authority

PROCEED AT CAUTION HOWEVER

41
Q

At the exit of a TBW section what is the process?

A
  1. STOP the train at the exit signal
  2. Set the DRA
  3. Hand the RT3184 to the hand signaller
  4. Reinstate the TPWS
  5. hand signaller will then remove detonator from the line and show a yellow flag [signal may clear to green] although obey the hand signaller not the main aspect.
  6. Release the DRA
  7. Proceed past the exit signal and contiue your journey obeying all signals as normal.
42
Q

If you are at the exit signal of TBW and the signal clears to green, does that on its own mean you are cleared to proceed?

A

NO,

even if the signal clears to green you must wait for the hand signaller to remove the detonator and show a yellow flag.

43
Q

Can a signaller authorise you past two consecutive signals which are faulty without introducing ESW or TBW?

A

Yes, providing:

  1. If its the same fault and neither signals can display a proceed aspect
  2. No main aspect distant signal between the two signals
  3. Track has been examined and its clear up to an including the overlap of the next main aspect stop signal beyond the second main apsect stop signal. [basically clear to the third working signal including that signals overlap]
  4. The signal beyond the second main aspect is showing a proceed aspect {third working signal showing proceed]
44
Q

What is the process when a signaller authorises you past two consecutive broken signals without introducing ESW or TBW?

A
  1. Repeat all instructions and understand them
  2. Pass both signals at danger
  3. Ignore ground position lights unless told otherwise
  4. Obey subsequent signals past failed ones
  5. Max 50mph
45
Q

What can you do if you arrive at a stop signal which is at danger and the signal box controlling that signal is closed?

A

Pass the signal at danger on your own authority. But only is the signal box is closed.

46
Q

How do you proceed past a signal at danger on your own authority when the signal box controlling it is closed?

A
  1. ensure all points, switch diamonds and swingnose crossing are set correctly
  2. Operate TPWS TS Override
  3. Max 15mph over points, SD and SWNC
  4. Max 10mph through tunnel
  5. Pass Auto level crossings only when sure they are clear
  6. Continue like this until you reach a signaller controlled by an open signal box
