Q

Essential Variable ?

A

variables that have significant effect on the mech properties of a joint. Must NOT be changed except within the limits specified by this code, material thickness range, material group, welding process

Q

Non-Essential Variable ?

A

variables that DO NOT have significant effect on the mech properties of a joint. Can be changed w/o requalification of the PQR

Q

Supplementary Variables ?

A

(Essential and non - essential) influence the impact properties of a joint. Classed as non essential if impact test is NOT required.

Q

What is a PQR?

A

record containing information about the test conducted over the welds made to a WPS. the variables used during welding of the test coupon and the successful qualification of that WPS.

before a WPS can be drafted, a preliminary set of procedures and materials must be established. This initial procedure is used to create a series of welds which are then mechanically tested to ensure they meet all applicable requirements. The procedures for creating and testing the sample welds, as well as the final results, are documented on a Procedure Qualification Record, or PQR. If the test results are acceptable, the PQR is approved and can then serve as the foundation on which one or more WPSs are drafted.

Q

What is WPS?

A

formal written document describing the welding procedure, which provides direction to the welder for making sound and quality production welds per code.

This includes information such as base metal grade, filler metal classification, amperage range, shielding gas composition, and pre-heat and interpass temperatures.
