Q

When would the Aerobic energy system be used?

A

Exercise intensity is low and oxygen supply eg. Jogging, the aerobic system is the preferred energy pathway

Q

How does the aerobic system provide energy? Stage 1

A

Has 3 stages:

  1. Glycolysis- first stage is a anaerobic so takes place in the sarcoplasm of the muscle cell. For every molecule of glucose undergoing glycolysis, two molecules of ATP are formed.
    - then oxidized into two acetyl groups and is then carried into Krebs cycle by coenzyme A

Q

How does the aerobic system provide energy? Stage 2

A
  1. Krebs cycle- the two acetyl groups diffuse into the matrix of mitochondria

Q

How does the aerobic system provide energy? Stage 3

A
  1. Electron transport chain- hydrogen is carried to the electron transport chain by hydrogen carries.

Q

Electron transport chain

A

Involves a series of chemical reactions in the cristae of the mitochondria where hydrogen is oxidized to water and 34 ATP are produced
