Q

What is bottom-up processing?

A

Bottom-up processing is a type of information processing based on incoming data from the environment to form a perception. Information enters the eyes in one direction (input), and is then turned into an image by the brain that can be interpreted and recognized as a perception (output).

The outside data drive the system. Sensory inputs get registered onto a sensory memory, and then are processed at higher and higher levels until a match is finally found with something in long-term memory.

Q

What is top-down processing?

A

In a top-down approach an overview of the system is formulated, specifying but not detailing any first-level subsystems. Each subsystem is then refined in yet greater detail, sometimes in many additional subsystem levels, until the entire specification is reduced to base elements.

In top-down processing, your beliefs, cognitions, and expectations in part drive the pattern recognition process. Some of this may be conscious, but some may also be unconscious.

Q

Example for issues with top-down and bottom-up.

A

Example1: small cars hit more often from behind, since relative size is smaller (failure of top down)

Example 2.: altering spacing of pavement markings produced an illusion of acceleration, helped slow people down

Q

What are cross modal design considerations?

A

Sensory systems can get mixed up or overide each other and cause mistakes to happen. People can make mistakes due to the sensory system making mistakes.
