10.6 Lymphatic System Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the difference between Antigen & Antibody?
Antibody:
-A protein produced in response to an antigen that inactivates the harmful cell
Antigen:
Protein or polysaccharide “name tag” on a cell that brings about an immune response
What is Lymphatic System?
- returns tissue fluid to the circulatory system
- One way flow from lymph tissue back to blood
- never has RBC
- Helps control fluid balance
What is macrophage
Engulfs foreign particles (bacteria) by phagocytosis
Name the differences between B-lymphocyte and T-lymphocyte?
T-lymphocyte:
-WBC that directly attack foreign cells that bear antigens
-“Killer T-cells”
B-lymphocyte:
-WBC that produces antibody-producing plasma cells in the presence of a specific antigen.
What does a lymph node do
Contains spaces filled with WBC (lymphocytes and macrophages to filter and clean the lymph
-Clustered at armpits, groin, and neck
How are Lymph vein and lymph capillary different?
Lymph capillary:
-Absorbs excess fluid from tissue that has leaked out of blood capillaries
-takes up any waste left in capillary beds
Lymph vein:
-Collect fluid from the lymph capillaries and returns it to blood in subclavian veins
What is the Thymus function
A gland that is the site of maturation of T-lymphocytes (a type of WBC)
Define a spleens function
“Blood reservoir”
-contains RBC and WBC to clean the blood
On a capillary bed, describe what happening at the arteriole end
- Blood pressure is higher than osmotic pressure
- Water moves out of blood into tissues
On a capillary bed, describe whats happening at the venule end (beginning)
- Blood pressure is lower than osmotic pressure
- MOST water moves back into blood from tissues
How does blood move through capillaries from arteriole to venule
- (oxygen, glucose,A.A, fatty acids, glycerol leave the blood) to tissues
- CO2 + other wastes also enter blood from tissues
What is osmotic pressure (OP)
-force generated by presence of salts + plasma proteins in blood that pulls water back into blood
edema (define and cause)
- localized swelling due to accumulation of fluid in tissue
- usually bc of low plasma proteins
what is a stroke
when a portion of the brain dies due to lack of oxygen
what is atherosclerosis
“hardening of the arteries”
