Q

Normal Hydraulic Operation

A
  • Automatic (remote) and Manual (RMCU)
  • Full capabilities and full safety features
  • Hydraulic motor drives the gear train assembly, which is connected to the reel and cable. The gear train assembly has a hydraulic clutch that disengages the auxiliary motor assembly when operating in hydraulic mode.

Q

Wing SOP Dipping Restrictions

A

Dipping sonar operations should not be conducted in seas with wave heights exceeding 10 feet, winds exceeding 17-21 knots, or known/discovered currents greater than 4 kts during ULT or fleet level exercises. Pre-flight deliberate ORM and in-flight TCRM assessments of forecasted or observed sea state conditions and currents shall be accomplished prior to dipping sonar operations.

Q

Auxiliary Hydraulic Mode

A
  • Allows the operator to manually control the servo valve in the event of an RMIU failure, bypassing the RMIU and RMCU
  • Bypasses all safety interlocks
  • Does not automatically stop the transducer at trail
  • Does not automatically seat or lock the transducer
  • Speed range is restricted
  • Provides finer control of the transducer raise/lower speed
  • 6 ft/sec within 60ft of the aircraft
  • Used if prescribed by sonar troubleshooting procedures or in the vent of electrical power loss
  • NO ESD
  • Needs only hydraulic power and 28 Vdc essential power to control the reeling machine
  • Most commonly used for correcting miswraps, reseating the transducer, to obtain a seated indication, and retrieving the transducer when a fault or failure in the reeling machine control system has occurred.

Q

Aux Electric Mode

A
  • Reeling machine uses the aux motor to drive the gear train assembly
  • Full safety features
  • Will automatically close the array when raise is selected
  • Will automatically stop the transducer at trail
  • Will automatically seat and lock the transducer
  • Slower raise speed
  • Cable not sufficiently tensioned if raised form 1000 ft or deeper in Aux Electric mode
  • Used if prescribed by sonar troubleshooting procedures or in the event of a hydraulic failure
  • Works in raise direction only

Q

Aux Hardware Electric Mode

A
  • Reeling machine uses the aux motor to drive the gear train assembly
  • Bypasses all safety interlocks
  • Does not automatically stop the transducer at trail
  • Does not automatically seat or lock the transducer
  • Aux motor is controlled directly by the RMCU, circumventing RMIU electronics
  • Used if prescribed by sonar troubleshooting or as a last resort to recover the transducer when there are failures that prevent any other mode of operation
  • Operates only in the raise direction

Q

Hand Crank Mode

A
  • Used for maintenance purposes only
  • Hand crank switch on on the safeguard assembly is engaged, disables hydraulic and Aux Electric modes
  • Torque wrench installed and raises/lowers transducer

Q

Wing SOP POCL Restrictions

A

During dipping sonar training operations (with or without a submarine), POCL shall be no more than half the ceiling up to 1,000 FT ceiling. When ceilings are above 1,000 FT, POCL shall be no more than 500 FT below ceiling. During operational ASW involving a submarine, under conditions that preclude a free stream recovery, then POCL need not be restricted. However, ORM shall be conducted to minimize the risk to the transducer assembly in the event of a malfunction.

Q

Wing SOP Restrictions AFCS Degredations

A

Dipping operating are prohibited with AFCS degradations affecting automatic approach, coupled hover, or cable angle hover functions. Cease dipping operations following any uncommanded pitch changes in a hover until Mx action is performed.
