Why does the breathing rate remain high after exercise?

A

To repay oxygen debt, the lactic acid must be transported to the liver where it is broken down into carbon dioxide and water using oxygen.

Anaerobic respiration produces poisonous lactic acid, which exhausts the muscles by making the contractions less efficient. This lactic acid must be removed by oxidation (using oxygen) into carbon dioxide and water. This is why the body continues to breathe heavily even after the exercise. The body first “owes” oxygen to the muscles during the anaerobic respiration, and is simply
repaying the “debt” (the oxygen) back to the muscles. This is called oxygen debt.
