Q

What is the difference between diffusion and osmosis

A

osmosis requires a semi permeable membrane where as diffusion doesn’t

Q

How does high salt or sugar concentrations help preserve certain foods?

A

bacteria and fungi have cell walls when placed in a sugar solution they will loose water by osmosis meaning enzymes action will be stopped

Q

What is meant by plasmolysed?

A

shrinking of the cytoplasm away from the wall of a living cell due to outward osmotic flow of water

Q

Describe how you carried out an experiment for osmosis?

A
  1. Soak visking tubing in water
  2. tie a knot
  3. fill one with sucrose solution and one with water
  4. get the mass of the Viking tubing and their solution
  5. place them in a beaker filled with distilled water
  6. Leave apparatus for 30 minutes
  7. remove them from water and get their mass
  8. Control: stayed the same
  9. Sucrose visking tube filled with water by osmosis
