What was the significance of the Greensboro Sit-ins and other sit-ins?
The Greensboro sit-in took place at Woolworths cafe in 1960 when 4 students from SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee) sat down and asked to be served at a white-only cafe, but was refused and abused.
By the fourth day of protest, there were 300 students taking part in the sit-in and were finally served on July 25th
Who were the Freedom Riders?
Freedom Riders were groups of white and African American civil rights activists who participated in Freedom Rides, bus trips through the American South in 1961 to protest segregated bus terminals
KKK and the Anniston Bombing
On May 14, 1961, a bus carrying Freedom Riders (white and black) arrived at the Anniston, Alabama. Led by the KKK, a mob of 50 men armed with chains, and bats, smashed windows and slashed tires of the bus. Then they threw in a firebomb, no one was injured. The police pretended nothing happened
James Meredith case, 1962
James Meredith was a black student who wanted to enroll at the University of Mississippi but was refused a place by governor George Wallace, at this point in time there had been a change in office, Kennedy had been signed into Presidency in 1961. Kennedy sent 23,000 guards to protect and help James study at the University.
