Cell Division Diversity Flashcards

1
Q

Homologous pair meaning

A

They are made from one paternal and maternal copy. They carry the same genes but different alleles. They are the same length

Q

What’s the difference between plant and animal cell division

A

In plants plates from between new cells and cell division only occurs in the meristem

Q

How are plant cells organized into tissues

A

Xylem walls are lignified. Xylem transports water via a transportation stream. Phloem consists of sieve tube element and contains no nucleus. It’s where translocation occurs

Q

How does genetic variation occur

A

Independent assortment of homologous chromosomes occur in metaphase 1so homologous chromosomes have different alleles as they come from different parents. Crossing over occurs in prophase 1. Chromatids will have a new combination of alleles. Mutations are changes to dna base. If damage is not recognized homologous pairs don’t separate so gametes are not genetically identical

Q

how does crossing over occur

A

chromosomes associate with each other ,chiasmata forms, equal lengths of alleles are exchanged producing a new combination of alleles.
