Principles of Immunisation Flashcards

1
Q

What is active immunisation

A

brought about by a foreign antigen triggering an adaptive immune response within the body

creates immunological memory

initial response is slow but provides quicker defence against recurring infections by the same pathogen

Q

examples of vaccines for active immunity

A

live organisms (Attenuated) MMR or BCG

killed organism

toxid

recombinant - genetically altered, antigen coding gene is removed and replaced into yeast chromosome

conjugate- antigen as a carbohydrate is bound to a protein ie, strep Pneumoniae, Neisseria Meningitidis, Haemophilus Influenzaem

A

gives quick and immediate protection but does not create memory

involves inoculating the patient with antibodies specific to the pathogen
