What is brutal body contact?
Conforms to the offical rules of the sport, legal under the law of the land, more or less accepted
Wha is borderline violence?
Violates official rules of the sport, violates the law of the land, still widely accepted.
What is quasi-criminal violence?
Violates official rules of the sport, violates the law of the land. Informal player norms, more or less not accepted.
What is criminal violence?
Violates official rules of the sport, law of the land, and players informal norms, not accepted.
What was the Jimmy Boni Case?
He retaliated to a punch and slashed Miran Schrott in the chest, who then never regained consciousness and died of cardiac arrest- Boni initially charged with intentional homicide, but plead to reduced charge of manslaughter with a fine of 1800.
What was the Howard Collins Case?
Welsh rugby player sentenced for up to 6 months in jail for stomping on an opponents head, which required 10 stitches and plastic surgery.
What was the Eric Cantona Case?
Charrged with common assault for a kung-fu style assault on a taunting Crystal Palace fan during a regular English Premier league game- plead guilty, sentenced to 2 weeks in jail.
What was the Duncan Ferguson Case?
Scottish soccer player with 3 previous convictions for assault was sentenced to 3 months in jail for head butting an opponent during a game- served 44 days in Glasgow prison.
What was the Simon Devereux case?
British rugby player found guilty on charges of grievous bodily hrm and jailed for 9 months for punching his opposing captain, breaking his jaw in 3 places.
What was the Charlottetown Hockey Case?
In a playoff game between UMoncton and UPEI, with 30 seconds left in overtime, a controversial goal prompted 12 moncton players to swarm the referee, punch him, and spear him with their sticks. Took over a dozen police officers to restore order.
What was the Marty McSorley case?
Boston Bruin was charged with assault after striking Vancouver Canuck, with his stick. Guy convulsed but recuperated, received 18 month conditional discharge and a 23 game NHL suspension but no criminal record.
