- reform began in 1846
- early 1870 established one supreme court consisting of: high court: divided into 3 divisions: queens bench (civ n crim), chancery (civ) and family (civ)
- court of appeal divided into 2: crim and civil matters
- county courts were established n became national civil courts to end n wales to deal with civ stuff
