How can the Expected Value framework be used to tackle a business problem?

A
  • During the stages of business understanding and data understanding, the solution to the business problem must be designed or engineered
  • Expected value can be used as a framework for structuring the approach to engineering a solution to the business problem
  • Sometimes the value of an outcome can be estimated by looking at historical data
    • Such model would be trained only on the customers that responded and then estimate their value
  • Expected value framework provides a helpful decomposition of possibly complicated business problems into subproblems that we understand better how to solve

How does Selection Bias affect the data?

A
  • The data used to create the model was not selected randomly from the population to which you intend to apply the model, but instead was biased in some way
    • Important to consider whether the selection procedure that biases the data is also likely to have an impact on the value of the target variable (does selection procedure affect target variable?)
  • Important to assure that nothing substantial has changed in the business environment that would call into question the use of historical data for prediction of the target variable

A

Firstly, what this is saying is that the true positive and true negative values need to add up to 60% of the dataset. Thereafter, given that the model predicts 75% of the customers that will not adhere to a DS correctly, for the total number of 0s in digital subscription, 75% of it needs to be in the tn box.

A

You count up the target variable for the individual classes, i.e. how often each one occurs and you then split them evenly across the groups tp and fn, and fp and tn.
