Assist and hinders absorption Flashcards

1
Q

Assist calcium absorption

A

Vitamin D- controls absorption of calcium without it, calcium can’t be absorbed
Lactose - sugar present in milk, increase calcium absorption in digestion
Protein - amino acid form from protein because of digestion, amino acid combine with calcium to make salt the is soluble and readily absorbed

Q

Hinders calcium absorption

A

Lack of Vitamin D - less calcium absorbed, weak and teeth
Phytic acid - found in wholegrain cereal food, combines with calcium and prevents it being absorbed
Fibre - calcium and fibre join together and can’t be absorbed
Fats - saturated fatty acids joins with calcium to make insoluble soap that cannot be absorbed
Oxalic acid- rhubarb and spinach leaves, interrupts calcium absorption

Q

Hinders Iron absorption

A

Lack of vitamin C - cant change into ferrous form
Fibre - too much fibre can bind to iron causing it not to be absorbed in the blood stream
Phytates - takes away iron from body as it forms a complex with iron that cant be absorbed
Phytic acid - found in wholegrain cereal combines with iron and stop sit being absorbed into the blood stream
