What is meant by ‘traditional media’?
Traditional media is the part of the media industry which existed before computers and the internet.
What are the four sectors in traditional media?
Film, television, radio and, print publishing.
What is the film sector?
Video for cinema releases and home video. It includes audio, animation and special effects. Evolved to include streaming services too.
What is the television sector?
Live and pre-recorded content for broadcast via aerials. It includes both factual and fictional content. Evolved to also be broadcast via satellites and streaming services.
What is the radio sector?
This includes live and pre-recorded audio. It is still broadcast using AM and FM, but is now available digitally (DAB) and can often be streamed on the internet. Available as podcasts too.
What are the four sectors of new media?
Computer games, interactive media, digital publishing, and internet.
What is the computer games sector?
Games may be designed for consoles, computers or portable devices, e.g. phones.
What is the interactive media sector?
Systems which respond to choices input by users, e.g. a fast food ordering system. Other examples include interactive presentations and information kiosks, e.g. in shopping centres.
What is the digital publishing sector?
Material designed to be viewed/listened to using digital services such as tablets, computers and smartphones. It includes blogs, podcasts and ebooks.
What is the internet sector?
The creation and use of online content. This includes websites, social media, streaming services and, messaging services.
What is meant by a ‘media product’?
Something made by or used in the media industry.
What are the thirteen media products in the industry?
Video, audio, music, animation, special effects, digital imaging/graphics, social media/apps, digital games, comics, websites, multimedia, ebooks, augmented/virtual reality.
What media products would be used in film (traditional media)?
Video, audio, music and, animation.
What media products would be used in print publishing (traditional media)?
Digital imaging/graphics, comics and, websites.
What media products would be used in computer games (traditional media)?
Video, audio, music and, animation.
What media products would be used in interactive media?
Augmented/virtual reality, digital imaging/graphics and, audio.
How is digital technology changing how media is created?
Digital technology allows for evolution of traditional media products. For example, AI (artificial intelligence) allows for creation of original content based on a description given to a computer.
What is the difference between audio and music?
Music is recordings of instrumental and vocal sounds, whereas audio is a recording of music, singing, spoken word and other sounds.
What are two examples of audio products?
Podcasts and audiobooks.
What is animation?
The illusion of movement from a series of still images. Includes 2D hand-drawn animation, stop motion and 3D computer-generated animation.
What are special effects?
Visual tricks used to create scenes or pieces of action that are difficult to do for real.
What is the difference between SFX and VFX?
SFX (special effects) are often used in real-life during filming, e.g. explosions or prosthetic makeup. Whereas, VFX (visual effects) are usually added during post-production editing, e.g. placing actors in a fantasy world.
What are digital images/graphics?
Digitally edited photographs or original graphics.
What are four examples of everyday products that use digital images/graphics?
Food packaging, game covers, logos and, posters.
