A traumatic hip injury where the femoral head is dislocated out of the acetabular socket

What is the normal mechanism of a hip disloation?

A

A young patient who has experienced high energy trauma - such as a car crash (knees up on dashboard)

Why is hip dislocation uncommon?

A

As it is a stable joint due to

  • labrum
  • capsule
  • ligaments - e.g. ligamentum teres

How is hip dislocation treated?

A

Non operative - closed reduction within 12 hours

Surgery - open reduction - if irreducible, delayed presentation or alongside fractures

A

Post traumatic arthritis
Femoral head necrosis
Sciatic nerve injury
Recurrent dislocations

A

A

It is always a fracture dislocation.
