A

Valgus (lateral movement) stabiliser of the knee

How does a medial collateral ligament tear present?

A

Sudden medial joint line pain after trauma
Tenderness along medial knee
Swelling
Increased laxity - on valgus stress test

How is a MCL tear investigation

A

Gold standard - MRI scan

XRAY can be done post trauma to exclude any fractures

How are MCL tears managed?

A

If mild - RICE, analgesia (NSAIDs), physio

Moderate - above + knee brace + strength training

Severe - above + crutches. Sometimes surgery will be needed (if distal avulsion)
