Map types Flashcards
What are choropleth maps?
map which uses shades of colour to show data. Darkest colour = highest number.
When would you use a choropleth map?
When showing spatial distribution of data.
What are the strengths of a choropleth map?
Shows spatial distribution
Clear and visual > easy to make comparisons/analyse > through use of colour/shading
What are the weaknesses of a choropleth map?
Average > doesn’t show disparity
Shows a sudden change when really gradual.
May not give exact/actual data.
What are proportional circle maps?
size of the circle shows the amount of data.
When should you use a proportional circle map?
When showing data and distribution.
What are the strengths of using a proportional circle map?
Shows spatial distribution.
Shows numbers and percentages> and a large range of values
Easy to analyse > as symbols proportional to value > can make comparisons/show difference between places
What are the weaknesses of using a proportional circle map?
May overlap and be difficult to read.
Not accurate: can’t find exact data.
What are dot maps?
a map that shows the spatial distribution of a variable using many equally sized dots, dot is equal to a given value and plotted where that value occurs.
When should you use a dot map?
To show distribution of data.
What are the strengths of using a dot map?
Shows DISTRIBUTION
What are the weaknesses of using a dot map?
Large number of dots are difficult to count.
Doesn’t show exact data.
Dot is equal to a given value - is anywhere without a dot empty?
