Q

What are the strengths of likert/bipolar surveys?

A

Can calculate total scores & convert to quantitative data > easier to analyse present .
Easy to understand > can use for surveying the general public etc.
Quick to complete > can gather large amounts of data even if time limited (a larger sample size > more reliable).
Shows subjective opinions/strength of people’s opinions and feelings.
Option for no opinion > people are not forced to make a choice which may not reflect their true opinion.

Q

What are the weaknesses of likert/bipolar surveys?

A

Subjective > may not be an accurate view.
Not clear what different categories mean this means answers may not be comparable
Endpoints of bipolar surveys need to be exact opposites.
Levels of accuracy > if people are unsure tend to give middle answer
Range of possibilities is narrow so major differences may not show up.

Q

What are the common issues with surveys (evaluation)?

A

Must use clear/understandable language (explain geographical terms) > so everyone understands the question and can give their true answer
Make sure meaning of categories is clear e.g. ‘average’ > makes sure that categories mean the same to everyone and therefore answers can be compared between people (more reliable).
Don’t use leading questions > don’t encourage people to give a certain answer even if it isn’t their actual opinion.
Make sure categories are equally sized and don’t overlap >so can easily and fairly compare between categories.
Give the option to choose ‘other’ > so not forced to choose an answer which may not be their actual answer (improve reliability and accuracy).
Remember surveys are subjective > based on opinions NOT facts
If people are unsure they tend to give the middle answer > reducing accuracy

Q

How could you reduce risks?

A

Risk of uneven ground/slipping > suitable footwear > reduce injury risk
Isolation risk > carried mobile phones
Fast flowing rivers > measurements in safer locations
Unstable cliff face > hard harts
High/low temperatures > use sun cream to reduce risk of sunburn.
