Plant Minerals Flashcards

1
Q

What is Magnesium used for in plants?

A

It’s necessary for the production of chlorophyll. Without chlorophyll, the plant lead cannot photosynthesis.

Q

Lack of magnesium can lead to what?

A

it can lead to premature aging of plant cells. Older leaves often show magnesium deficiency first, as it’s easily transferred from leaf to leaf when its not bound to chlorophyll

Q

Lack of Phosphorus can lead to what?

A

Lack of Phosphorus means poor growth and leaves that blue/green ( but not yellow).

Older leaves are affected first
Fruits are small and acid tasting
The undersides of leaves, and the veins and the stems, may turn purple.

Q

What is potassium needed for in plants?

A

It is needed in the cytoplasm of plant cells so that reactions occur. It is also needed for protein synthesis, and the opening and closing of the stomata.

Q

Lack of potassium lead to what?

A

Potassium is easily moved between cells soo older leaves display potassium deficiency first as it moved to younger leaves.

Q

Lack of nitrogen lead to what?

A

Lack of nitrogen leads to a lack of chlorophyll which means that the plant cant photosynthesis.

Leaves are pale green or yellow because they are unable to make sufficient chlorophyll.

Q

What are Calcium ions need for in plants?

A

They are required for plant growth. They are important component of the cell wall.

Calcium ions bind to the pectins on the cell wall to help stabilise the cell wall

Q

Lack of calium ions lead to what?

A

The older, larger leaves just above the bottommost ones will show the first symptoms. Yellow/brown spots occur, which are often surrounded by a sharp-brown outline edge. In addition, the growth is curbed and in serious cases the tops are smaller than normal and do not close
