1.11 Design for manufacture, maintenance repair and disposal Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the 6Rs
Recycle-make parts recoverable to be used again at end of life
Reuse-make it possible for products to be reused
Reduce-reduce material usage (designers), reduce purchases (consumers)
Repair-design products that can be repaired instead of disposed
Rethink-consider more sustainable alternative for designers and consumers
Refuse-avoid designs which use harmful materials/not environmentally friendly
What is upcylcing?
creative reuse of unwanted products and materials, resulting in outcomes with a higher quality or environmental worth than the original. Small things like turning jars into plant pots qualify as upcycling but there are also larger scale projects like creating lighting from old bottles
Explain some strategies adopted by manufacturers to maximise the ease of manufacture
-using a modular approach so subsystems are easier to track and fault find
-using standardised parts and sizes
-injection moulding where lots of parts are needed
-using self finishing materials like polymers
-using redistribution methods as this will reduce number of manufacturing processes
-using factory planning and simulation software to ensure optimal layout of elements on factory floor
-using adhesives instead of mechanical fastenings (quicker)
-reducing thickness of cast and moulded parts by incorporating ribs and webbing to maintain appropriate strength in parts that are produced
-using integral snap fittings in polymers to reduce the need for fixings/adhesives
-internal moulded screws for use with self tapping screws
-using premade components
-texture added in moulding (fewer processes)
what are ribs and webbing used for?
features used to strengthen and support a product without adding much extra material, weight, or cost. These are commonly seen in plastic and metal components, especially in injection moulded or cast products.
What are ribs?
Definition: Thin, flat sections that stick out from a surface at a right angle.
Purpose: Add strength and rigidity to a part, especially where bending or flexing could happen.
Used in: Plastic casings, internal frames, structural parts.
Example: The inside of a plastic remote control often has ribs to prevent it from flexing.
What is webbing?
Definition: A flat, lattice-like structure that connects multiple areas of a component.
Purpose: Distributes stress and provides strength across a larger area.
Used in: Complex shapes like brackets, handles, or support arms where multiple ribs would intersect.
Example: The underside of a plastic chair or toy might have webbing to add strength without making it solid.
Give ways a product can be designed for disassembly
smart materials like SMA and SMP fastenings to hold together elements of phones
biodegradable parts (e.g. PHA pen body)
standaradisedd components like pozidriv screws (not specialised)
