1.4.5 The use of adhesives and fixings Flashcards
(8 cards)
Name some adhesives and substances used to stick materials together
Polyvinyl acetate
Contact adhesives
UV hardening adhesives
Solvent cement
Explain PVA
polyvinyl acetate is used to bond most woods. Water based adhesive which soaks into the surface of the wood and sets once the wood has absorbed the water content. Not waterproof usually. Often used for indoor furniture products
Explain contact adhesives
Used for large areas like sheet metal. Can join same or different materials and two surfaces are coated in adhesive and left for 10 mins before being brought into contact with each other. No clamping required as adhesion is instant
Explain UV hardening adhesives
a clear liquid that cures to form a bond when exposed to UV light. Can join metal, glass and polymers. Any excess adhesive can be wiped away with a cloth before setting with UV light, giving solid and clean joint . No mixing and fast curing time. Used when transparency is important
Explain solvent cement
clear liquid used to join polymers. Softens the surface of polymers to be joined, allowing them to fuse together
What is a fixture?
Holds work in a given position while a manufacturing process takes place
What is a jig?
Holds both the work and guides a tool
