Science Quiz - Naming Compounds Flashcards

1
Q

Ionic Compounds

A
  • Metal + non-metal
  • Metal comes first, then non metal
  • Ends in “ide.”
  • Regular crisscross (equal 0)
  • Example - NaCl - Sodium (capital letter) chloride.

Q

Multivalent Compounds:

A
  • Still Metal + Non-Metal but METAL HAS MULTIPLE CHARGES
  • Metal comes first, then non metal
  • Ends in “ide.”
  • Regular crisscross (equal 0), but figure out what kind of charge
  • Things may have been reduced, check first.
  • Use Roman numerals
  • Example - PbO2 = Lead (IV) oxide

Q

Polyatomic Ions:

A
  • Still Metal + Non-Metal but (usually) METAL HAS MULTIPLE ATOMS THAT ACT AS ONE (!IN BRACKETS!)
  • Metal comes first, then non metal
  • Ends in “ate.”
  • Regular crisscross (equal 0), but everything within the brackets stays, overall charge (outside bracket) gets crisscrossed.
  • Example - Ca(Oh)2 = Calcium hydroxide

Diatomic Elements:

A
  • The SAME non-metals bonded to EACHOTHER.
  • HOBrFINCl
  • Written as Gas with 2
  • Example - H2 = Hydrogen has

Q

Molecular Compounds:

A
  • Now Non-metal + non metal
  • Second element ends in “ide.”
  • Add greek prefixes to show the number of each element.
  • DO NOT ADD “mono” TO FIRST ELEMENT, JUST SECOND.
  • Example - CS2 = Carbon disulfide
