Influences whether or not people conform and obey or whether they are able to resist social influence
Measured using a questionnaire which places people on a spectrum anywhere between high internal locus of control and high external locus of control
Internal locus of control
Belive they have control over own behaviour
Take responsibility for their actions
Do not seek social approval
Confident in decision making
So, less likely to conform or obey
Able to resist social influence
External locus of control
Belive behaviour is controlled by external forces such as luck or fate
Less confident about decision making
Often seek social approval
So, less likely to conform or obey
Less able to resist social influence
Social support
Allows people to resist social influence
Less likely to conform or obey as they are supported by others who also choose to not conform or obey
Gives them confidence in their own attitudes or behaviour, allowing them to show independent behaviour
Locus of control milgram
Holland (1967) who repeated milgrams study and measured whether ppts had an internal or external locus of control
Found that 37% of internals didn’t continue to highest shock level
23% of externals didn’t continue to highest shock level
Authotarian personality milgram
Elms and Milgram found that most obedient ppts in Milgrams original study scored more highly on the F-scale than those who were less obedient
Social support asch & milgram
Asch found that conformity rates fell to 5.5% from 36.8% in his original research when another confederate disagreed with the majority group by providing correct answer
Milgram found that obedience rates fell to 10% from 65% in the original research, when he paired the genuine ppt with 2 confederates who refuse to obey the authority figure
