1.12 Modern Materials Flashcards
(9 cards)
Define modern materials
Materials that are developed through the invention of new improved process
State the features of kevlar
Kevlar is a strong, lightweight synthetic fiber.
It’s famous for being very tough and resistant to stretching.
It’s five times stronger than steel by weight.
It’s heat resistant and doesn’t melt easily.
It’s flexible but doesn’t tear easily.
State two uses of kevlar
- Body armour
- Cut-proof gloves and aprons
- Aerospace applications,
- Surfboard components
- Puncture resistant bicycle tryes
State features of precious metal clay (PMC)
- Clay consistency material made up of line metal particles.
- Easily mouldable
- Easy to shape and form
- Sets hard once fired with a kiln or butane torch
- Inexpensive compared to solid metals such as sliver
State two uses of precious metal clay (PMC)
- Jewellery
- Decorative items
- Small sculptures
- Fobs
State features of high-density modelling foam
Polyurethane closed-cell foam blocks or sheets
- Lightweight
- Easy to work using traditional woodworking tools
- CNC miller/router
- Sands easily to allow intricate shapes and forms to be created
State two uses of high-density modelling foam
- 3D modelling
- Prototypes
State features of polymorph
Granules that becomes mouldable at about 60°C
- Can be heated in water or with a hair dryer
- Solidifies at room temperature
State two uses of polymorph
- Modelling
- Shaping ergonomic handles
- Prototype mechanical parts
