Q

Explain diluted acids’ use in a labatory.

A
  • Strong acids (eg. hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, nitric acid) are mixed with a lot of water (dilute.)
  • There is a label (harm) on them to show: harm to skin and minor health problems.
  • If it touches skin, needs to be washed off imediately.

Q

Explain concentrated acids’ use in a labatory.

A
  • Concentrated acids mixed with very little water.
  • Much more dangerous
  • They are corrosive (there is a label to show this.)

18
Q

What acid does Vitamin C have?

A

Ascorbic acid

19
Q

What is an acid?

A
  • An acid is a substance that produces H⁺ ions when dissolved in water.
  • Has a pH less than 7.
20
Q

What is an alkali?

A
  • A base which is soluble in water.
  • When dissolved in water, produces OH⁻ ions.
  • Has a pH more than 7.
21
Q

What is a base?

A
  • A base is a substance that will react with an acid to neutralise it (water) and form a salt.
22
Q

Explain when a substance is a base/ alkali.

A
  • All alkalis are bases.

- Not all bases will be alkali (only ones that dissolve in water.)

23
Q

What is a solute?

A
  • What is dissolving
24
Q

What is a solvent?

A
  • What the solute is dissolving in
25
Q

What is a solution?

A

Solvent + solute

26
Q

What substances are usually bases?

A
  • Metal oxides
  • Metal hydroxide
  • Metal carbonate
