Lesson 3: Acids and Alkalis Flashcards
What is a hazard?
A hazard is something that can cause harm.
What is a risk?
A risk is the chance that a hazard causes harm.
What does corrosive mean?
Corrsoive - able to damage metal, stonework, clothes and skin (burn through)
What are the safety precautions of a flammable substance?
- Keep away from flames.
What are the safety precautions of a toxic substance?
- Wear goggles for eyes.
- Wear a mask for mouth and nose.
What are the safety precautions for a corrosive substance?
- Wear gloves.
- Wash off immediately with water.
What are the safety precautions of a harmful substance?
- Wear goggles to protect eyes.
- Wash off using water.
What are the safety precautions for oxidising substances?
- Keep away from flames/ flammable substances.
What are the safety preacuations for environmental hazard substances?
- Don’t dispose of down the sink.
Explain diluted acids’ use in a labatory.
- Strong acids (eg. hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, nitric acid) are mixed with a lot of water (dilute.)
- There is a label (harm) on them to show: harm to skin and minor health problems.
- If it touches skin, needs to be washed off imediately.
Explain concentrated acids’ use in a labatory.
- Concentrated acids mixed with very little water.
- Much more dangerous
- They are corrosive (there is a label to show this.)
What is a dilute acid?
- A dilute acid has very little amount of dissolved solute.
- It is dissolved in water.
What are weak acids?
- Weak acids are ones that have very little dissolved solute. They are dilute.
What acid does vinegar have?
Ethanoic acid
What acid do lemons have?
Citric acid
