Lesson 5: Metal and Acid reactions Flashcards
What does metal + acid form?
Metal + acid — > salt + hydrogen
What do we see in a chemical reaction with metal+ acid?
- Bubbles (effervescence)
- From Hydrogen gas produced
- New substance formed (salt)
What is the test for hydrogen?
- Light a split (because hydrogen is very flammable)
- Put it in sample and a small explosion (sqeaky pop) will indicate presence of hydrogen.
What is the reactivity series?
- The reactivity series is a list of metals in order of their reactivity from most to least reactive
What two properties does a very reactive metal have?
- More vigorous reactions.
- Will lose electrons more easily forming positive ions (cations.)
What are the products of a metal + water?
metal + water –> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Describe and explain the observations when a small piece of lithium is placed on the surface of a big container of water. A few drops of universal indicator have been added to the water.
- Fizzing as the lithium reacts with water to form hydrogen.
- Colour will change from green to purple as an alklaine hydroixde has been formed (lithium hydroxide)
What is a salt?
- A salt is a substance formed when a metal ion repleaces a hydrogen ion.
Where in the reactivity series will a metal not react with an acid?
- Metals below hydrogen unreactive towards the hydrogen in the acid.
What do all acids contain?
- All acids contain hydrogen.
What does a metal carbonate + acid produce?
Metal salt + water + carbon dioxide.
Give word equation for neutralisation reaction.
Acid + Alkali/ Base –> Salt + water.
What does the salt that is formed in a neutralisation reaction depend on?
- Type of acid used
- Positive ions in base, alkali, carbonate.
