1.13 Flashcards
(7 cards)
Enzymes have specific functions and are affected by factors such as?
Temperature
presence of inhibitors
pH
Temperature and pH
For all enzymes there is an optimum temperature and pH level at which the maximum amount of collisions occur in the active sites.
tEMP
As temperature decreases there is less movement of particles and fewer collisions so enzyme activity decreases.
Temperature above optimal for a given enzyme will cause the enzyme to denature and the enzyme will no longer function
The rate of reaction will decrease significantly
pH
pH either above or below the optimal given for an enzyme will cause the rate of the enzyme activity to decrease thus decreasing the rate of reaction
very low or high pH will also denature enzymes.
Enzyme inhibitors
Competitive and non competitive
Competitive
very similar in shape to the substrate so they bind to the active site of the enzymes and prevent the substrate from binding
adding more substrate will reduce the effect of the inhibitor
Non competitive
Inhibitors binds to an enzyme but not in its active site
causing the active sity to change its shape and the substrate o longer fits
adding more substrate wll have no effect on the reation rate
