Flash Storage
Non-volatile solid state storage
Input device
Peripheral devices that allow data to be entered into the computer system
Magnetic Storage
Technique to store data using polarised magnetic metal. The polarity is used to represent a 1 or a 0
Optical Storage
Storage medium that uses discs on which the data is stored as pits and lands, Read by a laser; red for normal discs, blue for BluRay
Output device
Any peripheral device that translates signals from the computer into a human-readable form or into a form suitable for reprocessing by the computer at a later stage
RAM
Random Access Memory. Temporary storage of programs that are currently in use. Volatile
ROM
Read Only Memory. Non-volatile so it cannot be changed, runs the POST test and the bootstrap of the computer
Storage Device
Any medium (optical, magnetic, solid state) that holds data or programs
Virtual Memory
Based inside secondary storage, used when RAM is full, pages of unused programs are moved into virtual memory and back again when needed or more space is gained
