Q

What are the steps in the lactate system

A
  1. ATP requires resynthesizing
  2. Glycogen is present in the muscle cell and in the liver
  3. Glucose is broken down to provide the energy required
  4. Pyruvate is produced as a by product, breaks down into lactate
  5. One Glycogen molecule produces 3 new ATP molecules

Q

What are the benefits/disadvantages of the lactate system

A

Benefits

  • no oxygen required
  • greater production of ATP than ATP-PC system
  • lasts longer than ATP-PC system

Disadvantages

  • Lasts for a few minutes at most
  • very high level of muscle acidity using this system
  • may interfere with muscle contraction
  • may stop enzymes working
