Q

Circumstances in which the miracle occured/What transpired

A

Christ arrived to an unspecified area where a large crowd was gathered and scribes were arguing with them. Upon arriving, the crowd is amazed and run up to greet Him. Christ asks, “What are you arguing about with them?” to which someone from the crowd informs Him that they have brought to Christ their son, who is possessed by a mute spirit. The person elaborates, stating that the spirit causes their son to foam at the mouth, grind his teeth, and become rigid. The person has asked Christ’s disciples to drive the spirit away, but they were unable to do so. Christ asked that the son be brought to Him. Once in front of Christ, the spirit possessing the boy threw him into convulsions, as the boy began rolling around and foaming at the mouth. Christ asks how long it has been since the boy has been possessed, and the father responds that his son has been possessed since childhood, with the spirit often throwing the boy into fire and water to try to kill him, and urges Christ to help them. Christ states that everything is possible to one who has faith. The boy’s father states both that he does believe and asks Christ to help his unbelief. Upon seeing a crowd starting to rapidly gather, Christ rebuked the spirit. The spirit left soon after, and the son became like a corpse, which caused many to say, “He is dead!” However, Jesus then took the boy by the hand, raised him, and the boy stood up. It was later on revealed that the reason why the disciples couldn’t drive away the spirit is because the spirit was of a kind that can only come out through prayer, meaning that the person inflicted or someone close to them needs to have faith.
