External- Cultural Capital Flashcards

1
Q

What is different about cultural capital compared to cultural deprivation?

A

Doesn’t see WC culture as inferior or lacking but just different. Instead of blaming WC underachievement on their culture, CC focuses on dominance of MC culture in society and social institutions.

Q

Why are the MC more likely to succeed?

A

The education system is run by the middle class so runs on their interests. They can define their culture as superior and therefore WC students and their culture are marginalised in the education system and end up underachieving.

Q

Where is MC culture dominant?

A

In most of the education system. Schools place high value on MC skills and knowledge. MC children just ‘fit in’ and are at home in the environment so they do not need to be anything other than themselves to thrive in school.
