What happens as we acquire archetypes?
We repress true self qualities as they don’t conform to archetypes
How can we be integrated into our consciousness?
If we are able to realise our true self. Integration results in a balance of an individual’s personality
What is individuation?
The process of moving towards achievement of self
What does individuation aim to do?
Aims to divest the self of the false wrappings of the persona and the primordial images.
What must we get in touch with if we want to achieve true self-hood?
The shadow.
What do symbols of archetypes do?
They bring archetypes into our consciousness rather than in our collective unconsciousness. They mediate the process of individuation
What did Jung see these symbols as?
The images that form religious traditions. Religious stories, symbolism and rituals are all ways to identify archetypes.
What does the human dreams of a universal hero represent for Jung?
The universal God archetype in our collective unconscious. If we grasp this God figure we can begin to satisfy our archetypes.
Why did Jung think that much of organised religion had lost its power?
Because their symbols were no longer dynamic. People begin to think that symbols merely represent the object
What does Christ’s death symbolise?
Sacrifice of ego in order to become complete
What does the separation of Christ from God at birth symbolise?
Our separation from our parents
What does Holy Communion symbolise?
Those who sacrifice the selfish part of the ego, resulting in the self being transformed.
